The main difference between the female and male Downy Woodpecker is the red markings on the male's head. They inhabit shade trees anywhere from Alaska and Canada to the Southern U.S.
Hairy woodpeckers look very similar to the downy woodpeckers except that they are larger in body size, and they have longer and bigger bills. Hairy woodpeckers are found throughout the U.S. except for some small areas in the South.
Red-bellied woodpeckers have barred black and white feathers with a bright red head from their bills to the back of their neck. Females have a splash of red from its crown to its neck. They inhabit the eastern half of the country.
